Here are some smart shopping tips from the Direct Marketing Association and ComputerGear to ensure a safe, easy and fun online shopping experience. Although the links below go to ComputerGear policies, use these guidelines whenever you shop by phone, mail, fax, or computer.
Trust your instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Shop at secure sites. Look at the URL (the "Web address") when you reach the "checkout" page. If the URL starts with "https://" when it asks for your credit card number, it means that the document is coming from a secure server. Depending on your browser, an icon of either an unbroken lock or key will appear in the lower left corner or top of your screen.
Never give out personal information. You are not required to provide your bank account number, your Social Security number, or Internet password when ordering. Your credit card number and expiration date are all a merchant should need.
Never send cash through the U.S. mail. Pay by credit card. You'll be covered under the Fair Credit Billing Act in the event of non-delivery or fraud, whether you are shopping by phone, mail, or computer. Additionally, you will be responsible for only up to $50 in the unlikely event that your credit card is misused.
Keep your receipts, product packaging and literature, and order confirmation including URL and order number until you are satisfied with your purchase. If the merchandise arrives damaged or is incorrect, contact the company immediately.
Fill out the return form completely when returning merchandise. If a return form is not provided, clearly state the product returned, the reason for return, the method of payment used and your full name, address, and telephone number.
Keep organized records. Fill out the order form even if you're ordering by phone. It should contain the merchant's name, address, phone, fax and item inventory numbers; size, color, and name of product orders; method of payment you chose; delivery date and information; and any special requests you may have made. Or print your online order before you hit the final "submit" button.
